Smart meters

Smart meters connect your home in a two-way communication with the electric grid. Smart meters not only measure how much electricity is used, but also at what times during the day. This information allows you to see detailed information on how and when you are using your energy.

Also known as Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), smart meters allow Tipmont to manage the demand on the grid and implement a variety of load reduction and energy saving programs, helping reduce the cost of providing electricity to your home or business. This also helps you make more informed choices about your energy consumption and have greater control of your monthly costs.

When did Tipmont implement smart meters?

Tipmont implemented smart meters in 2010. Our board of directors determined that all members have a smart meter to maximize the benefits they offer.

Are smart meters safe?

There have been some questions raised about the low levels of RF energy produced during occasional data transmissions from smart meters.

Tipmont does not use any form of wireless communications to send data from our meters to our collectors. Rather, we use Power Line Carrier (PLC) communication.

What kind of information do you collect?

For single phase meters, we collect the amount of electricity you are using every eight hours and the voltage twice a day.

We do not collect any specific appliance or device use.

Are smart meters secure?

We do not use any form of wireless communications to send data from our meters to our collectors. Instead of using wireless communications, we use Power Line Carrier (PLC) communication. Using this technology avoids the vulnerabilities inherent to wireless communications.
