Next applications for Operation Round Up funds due October 4, 2010; open to nonprofits in Clinton, Fountain, Montgomery and Tippecanoe counties

Tipmont REMC is awarding grants totaling $12,571 to seven area nonprofits through its Operation Round Up program. Awards are made quarterly and open to 501(c)3 groups in Clinton, Fountain, Montgomery and Tippecanoe counties.

Applications for next EnviroWatts grants due September 6, open to organizations in eight counties

Tipmont REMC’s EnviroWatts “Green Power” Program has awarded $15,300 to three area nonprofits for green projects, reports chief executive officer Tim McCarthy. This distribution brings the total EnviroWatts awards since the program began in 2001 to $272,551.

This year 124 students were able to combine education and fun while attending the 2010 Touchstone Energy Camp.

The camp, held June 9-12 at YMCA Camp Tecumseh near Brookston, Ind., provided sixth graders from all around the state a chance to learn about basic electricity, electric safety, renewable energy and the role of an electric cooperative, while still enjoying traditional camp activities including horseback riding, archery, swimming, and leadership skill development.

 Tipmont REMC was a proud sponsor of the 2010 Electric Cooperative Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. Area students participating in this year’s trip included Gabby Harding from Attica High School, Erika Becker from Benton Central, Monique Parent from Central Catholic, Celeste Martin and Isaac Taylor from Fountain Central, Julia Fraseur from Harrison, Samantha Johnston from McCutcheon, Jacob Bohlander, Nicole Kingma, and Kiera Bonebrake from North Montgomery, and Madison Fouty from Southmont.

Students pursuing an associate’s degree in sustainable energy at Ivy Tech Community College-Lafayette will benefit from a new scholarship established by the Tipmont REMC EnviroWatts Trust. The Tipmont REMC/Ken Ritchey/EnviroWatts Sustainable Energy Scholarship will provide up to $5,000 over two years. The scholarship was established in honor of Ritchey, retired CEO of Tipmont REMC, to recognize his vision and leadership in developing sustainable energy sources as part of Tipmont REMC’s...

Introduction

Associated Press recently posted an article entitled, “’Smart’ meters have security holes”, that brought up security concerns about the “Smart Grid” technologies that are being deployed by various electric utilities. I’d like to address the specific concerns about the technology that will be utilized by Tipmont REMC.

Indiana Statewide Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives, Inc. hosted a graduation ceremony for 20 Rural Electric Apprentice Program (REAP) participants on January 30, 2010. Attendees included families, electric cooperative managers and Indiana Statewide Association staff. Events were held at the Sheraton Indianapolis City Centre.

In recent years, the technology for electric meters has advanced dramatically. At Tipmont, we’ve been keeping an eye on the advancements and continually evaluating what is available for our members. After a thorough review, we’ve decided it’s time to upgrade our meter reading system. Over the next three years we will be going through a process of changing out all of our old electromechanical meters and installing “smart” meters.
